Land and Sea Stern Jack |
The Stern Jack works best on boats that require substantial trim for best top speed. The reason you trim out is to add bow lift (increased angle of attack) which reduces hull drag. Trimming out helps bow lift by converting some of the blade's forward thrust into vertical down thrust at the stern -- this pivots the bow end up. So long as the boat picks up more speed (from the resulting hull drag reduction) than it trades away from lost forward push, then you gain with more trim out!
Because the Stern Jack increases the length of the moment arm trying to pivot the bow up, it requires LESS trim out for the same amount of lift. Plus, the Stern Jack is much more than just set back. For example, if you just added a transom mounted set back box, it pushes the drive deeper in the water -- creating MORE drag! This is because transoms are angled down 12 - 15 degrees. However, the patented Stern Jack mounts after the gimbal housing, so it actually raises the gearcase vertically higher when you trim out! The result is better bite and acceleration when trimmed under (because it puts the blades deeper then) and less drag (for improved top speed and handling) when trimmed out!
